9:14 am
good morning. thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> this is sort of news that we hear. we hear it every year. but boy, we also hear about illnesses and deaths related to the flu. this is a really big deal. dr. hansen, i'll start with you. why is it important to get your flu shot and what's new this year? >> right. the flu as we have been discussing is one of the more serious viral infections. west nile virus you're speaking about is something that's a serious public health issue as well. there's no vaccine for that, at least not yet. but for flu, there's a very effective vaccine that's been particularly effective the last few years here. so very important that everybody get vaccinated. more people that get vaccinated in the country, the less risk we have as a population in general it turns out. so the cdc a few years ago recommended that everybody over the age of 6 months get vaccinated with particular emphasis on the young children and the elderly because they're
9:15 am
at higher risk. >> how are we doing on shortages of vaccinations? >> we're doing great. i think everybody has their flu shot early, their flu shot supply early. we have more producers of flu vaccine than in the past so that really helps with not having shortages. >> okay. >> we have a variety of different types of flu vaccines available for people, different ways to administer the flu in shot. >> you brought some examples. i will in a couple of minutes get my flu shot but tell us what's new. >> the new is this new interdermal by adventist pasture and it's for the needle- phobics. it's get a short needle on it. >> whoo. >> you can barely see it. it enters the skin very gently and a tenth of a cc that goes under the skin. dr. hansen and i both have taken this. i find that it has less muscle soreness. you still are a little bump or rash where the shot was given. but overall, it's i think a
9:16 am
less painful shot. >> dr. hansen, let's address that. there are some folks out there that says you're giving me the flu and i'm going to feel this. what should you expect after you get your vaccination? >> the most important point to make is the idea that the flu shot can make you sick. it's completely false. there's actually nothing in any of these vaccines that is capable of introducing illnesses even the nasal vaccine with an activated virus. there is no possibility of introducing infection. what you might expect is the immune system response to the vaccine where you may feel aching, may even feel a fever particularly in the evening or the first 24 hours after the vaccine is given. but that's not infection. that is your immune system appropriately responding to the vaccine. so it's important to realize that although there are some people who are allergic to the vaccine, that's rare. most do benefit from having the
9:17 am
vaccine. >> so let's get started. nurse prindle has agreed to do mine. here's my consent form. we are doing this by the book here. there's that. i just -- dr. hansen, i'll ask you so we can keep talking and i don't focus on what i'm actually doing here, you know, how long does it last? some folks say i'm going to wait to get my flu shot later so it will last longer. >> what's the real deal here? >> it's an older misconception as well that if you get your flu shot too early in the season, then you may miss an opportunity to fight off infection later on, that the vaccine wears out. again, completely false. getting a vaccine right now as you're doing is still going to be effective throughout the season in the d.c. area. arguably, it's better to get it relatively early so that you have a chance for the vaccine to be fully effective by the time influenza reaches the d.c. area. so short answer being that there's really no reason to delay it at this point. >> okay. now, let me tell you something, i'm a pretty big baby.
9:18 am
that was fine. thank you so much. but you might also have the touch. been doing this for a while, right. nurse prindle, thank you so much for this and for coming in today. and it really is a painless way to do one thing that helps you keep moving this winter, right, this flu season. >> good idea. >> all right. this is dr. david hansen, this is registered nurse pamela prindle both from foxhall internists. thank you so much for coming in today. ton any, over to you. one big retailer doesn't want you to miss out on the season's hottest toys. how you can reserve yours straight ahead. >> it's sleek but the iphone 5 doesn't come with one accessory you'll need. we'll tell you what this is coming up next. >> first, let's check with holly. >> reporter: hey, tony. get your hiking shoes on because we are live on the appalachian trail this morning. 2,180 miles long, passes through 14 states and just happens to be turning 75 years

the election, post-convention conversations, conversations about ads, talking about the economy as well as what's happening with the chicago teachers that are on strike all things political, everything that's happening on the campaign trail and how this may impact who gets into the white house. this is professor lenny steinhorn. now, what we're going to do, switch things up this week because we want to get him as well as the students. he is teaching class. so real quick, before we get to the students, we are going to ask him about what's happening in libya and how that may impact what's happening over here in the race for the white house. >> well, it's sad to have something so tragic that went on over there become a political issue. but in politics and election, it certainly does. so the question we are going to be asking is, is this a breakdown, a failure of leadership on the president's part that he was unable to protect our people, that things are spinning out of control, or will this be an opportunity to show his leadership in the middle east? so we are going to be discussing that. the second point here is what's going on with mitt romney? is this going to hurt him because of his inexperience or
9:34 am
is he going to be able to sort of push his message that the president has been apologizing for people who are hostile toward the united states? now, he got himself in a little bit of a tempest because he seemed to have jumped the gun reacting to a comment from the american embassy in egypt that took place before the attacks on the embassies. this is what mitt romney said. he said, it's disgraceful that the obama administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks. even republican leaders have been distancing themselves from that but mitt romney has now doubled down on this statement. in effect, saying that this is i apologizing for people who don't like us. and i'll read one comment from nbc's first read on this. you would expect the sarah palins of the world to pounce on this and she did but a

presidential nominee after the facts have come out last night meaning two nights ago romney's statement only feeds the narrative that his campaign is desperate. so it turns out that even the biggest issues and the saddest loss of life become political talking points here in the united states. so i want to see what the class thinks about some of this stuff. is this going to help or hurt the president? and what's this going to do with mitt romney given how he's entered into this political issue? >> reporter: so you have heard from the professor. now we are going to give him the mic and let him talk to the students as he teaches his class about this issue. i'm going to get it from you in a second. >> so comments from people. what do you think? what's your first take on this particular issue? is this going to redound to the president's benefit because he is going to show leadership? does it hurt him because things are spinning out of control? some people said there's a potential for a 1979 type of perception when jimmy carter went down the drain on the whole hostage crisis? or is this going to hurt mitt romney more for politicizing?
9:36 am
so any thoughts? go ahead. >> i think it has a strong potential to weaken mitt romney's campaign especially with the comments that paul ryan made about tying the defense cuts with the situation that's happening in libya. i think it looks poor. i think americans aren't going to respond well to it and i think ultimately it's not going to help the romney campaign. >> some people have sort of taken off on that point and said it's a little unseemly to be mentioning these things at this moment in time when people's lives were at stake and increasingly jeopardized throughout the middle east. doug. >> i personally think it might hurt him a bit. i mean, mitt romney is fairly weak on foreign policy. and i think it will help the president. so. >> so you think he comes off as wobbly potentially seizing on the political issue? >> if you have hill leaders such as john boehner and eric cantor trying to distance
9:37 am
themselves from him it's a problem. >> all right. >> professor, we are going to let you continueteach class. thank you very much. we appreciate it. we are going to be here streaming live on the web. that's just a little bit of insilent into what's going to happen here -- insight into what's going to happen here in the campaign. streaming live on the webs, myfoxdc.com. we are here every thursday. back to you. >> thank you. intriguing. is there ng news. and is first to tell us about a major development. more than three years after the red line train crash the metro has developed a realtime monitoring system to prevent another deadly collision. nine people died in the 2009 crash near fort totten. the ntsb blamed a failure in the track circuits and automatic train control system which prevented the computer system from detecting one of the trains in the crash. today the agency announced that

significance of this, tony, is that they will be able to monitor the tracks in real time and if there was any problem with the computerized system that tracks the train, this backup system would identify the problems and then set off an alarm. there are already procedures now in place should that alarm go off. this system has been tested and the ntsb has endorsed the system. if you may remember, after the red line train crash, we discovered that there was no realtime backup system for metro's automatic train control system. in fact, there was not any system like this across the country. so it was a huge task to develop software to create this backup system. now we have it. and what this means for riders is that metro will be allowed to return to the automatic train control system. they haven't set a date on
9:53 am
that. there are also some other things that have to be done before they can do that but clearly, this is a major step forward. since the red line train crash, trains have been running on manual mode, passengers have been complaining about that. it has resulted in slightly slower service. you heard from passengers about a lot of issues with the braking on the trains. but a lot of that will be resolved once metro can go back to the automatic mode and operate in automatic mode. again, metro hasn't said when that could happen but this is a major step forward to seeing that happen. >> i know a lot of recommendations were being bantered about, things that metro should do from the ntsb. is this considered a major step forward here or what else needs to be done as far as public outcry, the ntsb, and metro too? >> reporter: this is absolutely perhaps the biggest step for metro after this red line train
9:54 am
crash. this is really a safety issue because what we found out is after the red line train crash that the monitoring system in place essentially created a report that was then reviewed and then they would identify anomalies. it wasn't realtime. so now what we have is something that will make the system safer so that if for some reason there is a problem, it gets identified immediately because what happened in that red line train crash is there was a failure in the track circuits and there was a failure in the automatic train control system that prevented the computer system from identifying one of the trains that was sitting on the tracks. and that's how the collision happened. and this system ideally will prevent something like that from ever happening again. >> so i'm sure there will be more information forthcoming as to when they will be able to put this in place. sherri ly breaking this story for us from metro headquarters. sherri ly, thank you very much
